sERVICE PROJECT TO Support Music Therapy at UCSF benioff Children's Hospital

What is music therapy?

“Music therapy is the applied use of music to measurably improve people’s lives by assisting them in making positive life changes. Music therapy is the functional and scientific application of music by a trained music therapist to enhance an individual’s social, emotional, educational, and behavioral development.” (Hanser, 2013)

Music Therapy looks at the whole child, brings forth their abilities, and provides opportunities for creative self-expression, normalization of the environment, emotional processing, and social interaction.  Music Therapy facilitates a space for the child to be a child, and express all the wonder, creativity, and inspiration they have to share with the world. The Music Listening Program at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital provides comfort support and the healing benefits of music when direct Music Therapy is not available. It is a continuum of service that is highly beneficial to the emotional health of the child, and also offers another resource for coping through the hospital experience. (Oliver Jacobson)
